What's Involved?

Trained observers who are experienced drivers who have all met the standard set by the IAM will take you out on the road and assist you in reaching the standard of driving required to pass the IAM test. The only requirements are that you have a full British driving licence and access to a roadworthy vehicle that you are insured to drive.

Who runs the group?

The group is a registered Scottish charity run entirely by volunteers who freely give up their time to improve road safety in the local area. The group meets on a Thursday night at 7.30pm in Ardrossan Civic Centre for the group meeting starting at 7.45pm. After group announcements you will go out on the road in your own vehicle with your observer, with each drive lasting approximately 40-45mins. Upon return to the fire station, come in for a coffee and have a social chat.

Who are the IAM?

As a charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists (the IAM) supports the raising of driving and riding standards and campaigns for increased on-road skills. They support and represent motorists, motorcyclists and are developing programmes for cyclists too. Through the local groups, they offer practical driving and riding programmes and urge all road users to act more responsibly and safely.

How much does it cost?

The Skills for Life Package costs just £139 which includes all your driving sessions, your required books, a years membership the group, and your advanced driving test.

What can I expect when I come along?

On your first week after your demonstration drive, you will be assigned to an observer, who will train you in the skills used in advanced driving. All our observers are volunteers, so while every effort is made to keep you assigned to the same observer throughout your training, sometimes you may be out with different observers.

Ok, I'm interested, what's the next step?

If you're interested in learning more about advanced driving then your first step should be to come along for a short, no obligation demonstration drive. A competent observer will take you out in their car and show you many of the techniques used by advanced drivers. If you enjoy your drive, then you can sign up for the Skill for Life package.
